Privot Hedge Roots

Hi all new to this forum, bought a house 2 years ago and just getting round to sorting the garden, I'm laying patio slabs and grass. The garden has a privot hedge divider between my garden and next doors and when lifting existing stones and weed sheeting I've discovered the roots run all the way across the garden sprouting weeds. Can I cut the roots near the base of the privot and pull them all out? Also will the roots start growing back after they have been cut. Thanks

Cutting an occasional root (for example to dig a planting hole for another plant) won't do any harm but digging them all out right back to the base of the plants will probably weaken them. The roots will grow back if the plants aren't killed.
Privet roots can't "sprout weeds" and in my experience they don't even produce suckers, so perhaps there's something else in there. The membrane might have been put down over some kind of weed in the hope of killing it off but it doesn't always work fully.

  • Thanks for the quick reply and advice it has shed some light on the situation.

Privet hedges don’t do that,  could the roots be Ground Elder.  A photo of the weed you think it is would be helpful for identification.

As @Lyn and @JennyJ say, privet doesn't do that, or sucker, so a photo will help with advice on the weed and any control of it  @kinkypanda87kXePEICr  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
