Fern trouble

Hello,

I bought some young ferns earlier in the year and after planting them out a month or two ago, I cut them back for the new season growth. However, since doing so only one tiny frond has appeared and it’s been that way for a while. Any suggestions on how to help it? I have two and they’ve both done the same. I was considering digging them back up and potting to bring them on? Flip flop men’s size 10 for scale! Any advice gratefully received.

thanks

Do you know what Ferns they are ?  Most of mine are thriving but they are established plants and in shady spots so not suffered from the recent hot dry weather - so far at least !
It's more than possible that yours were planted just at the time the weather changed and simply haven't had the conditions to allow them to establish. Plant size and preparation of the planting hole would also come into it.
You may well be better off doing as you suggest - dig up and pot them and put them in a shady spot and see if they pick up but  see what others say ?

That doesn't look to be ready to plant out just yet. If they were in a 9cm pot they would have been better potted on. As @philippasmith2 has mentioned do you know what they are? Some like dry soil whilst others need moist.
I have a form of Polystichum setiferum called 'Bevis 'it was small like yours and has taken a few years to bulk up.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • Thank you both for your help. I’m not sure what they are but I’ll dig them back up to give them a helping hand
