Sappy cherry tree

Hi all, I'm looking for some help with my edible cherry tree. I planted it 3 years ago and when I brought it home from the garden centre I noticed it had some curled leaves. Soon realised that wasn't normal and discovered it was blackfly and an army of ants were marching up and down farming them!

I have kept on top of the blackfly although they reappear on new leaves on the tips and it is just not thriving. Today I noticed a new problem, sticky lumps of sap on the top branches! What could this be? I googled and it suggested mechanical damage but it's definitely not that, I thought maybe some kind of borer but it's really high up? Any help would be appreciated 😊

Sorry the photos posted landscape! 🙃
  • My cherry tree did this over the years and also suffered from black fly. Not sure what causes the sap to ooze but I think I read it can lead to canker over time. I never bothered about it but after about 15yrs mine was suffering pretty bad with canker among other things so I cut it down last year. Was sorry to see the blossom go but never got a single cherry from it as the birds got in first.
