Variegated holly tree need help

Hi folks I'm a complete newbie to gardening and we have our first proper garden that I have worked quite hard on.
I have a holly tree that is around 9feet tall and prob a meter wide.
It looked great up until the really hot weather came and now it's dropping leaves at an alarming rate.
It's in a huge pot and I think I was underwatering to start with.
My neighbour said it's normal for evergreen to drop leaves around now and not to worry to much just keep on top of the watering but I'm worried it's had it.
I will add some pics tomorrow when the lighting is better.
There is new growth at the ends of the branches very small leaves but it looks very bare in the middle.
The leaves that are falling off are very crispy so I'm assuming they are to dry?.
Sorry for sounding clueless but I am quite enjoying my peace in the garden and it's one of my favourites and I'm panicking I've killed it.
Thank you.
Mike.

    Welcome to the forum.
A shrub in a pot is going to need a lot of water, especially at present if you are in an area that is hot and dry. It is true that all evergreens drop leaves, but not en masse.
Anyhow, don't panic. If there is new growth then all is not lost (hopefully).
When you've posted some photos it will be easier to see what needs to be done.
