Teasel

Although I suppose it would be classified as a weed,I’ve always grown the common teasel in my garden,it’s a truly beautiful and interesting plant, birds and insects love it when it flowers but this year I have a teasel standing 10 feet tall and it has well over 50 flowers on it,I’ve never known anything like it before,it truly is a one of a kind, anyone else grown them or have similar size

Teasels will seed at the front of a border or in the middle of a path. If only they'd be a bit co-operative and seed at the back of a border, we could live in harmony.

Welcome to the Forum @sidwallace/ireland. I have one growing just as @B3 mentions, at the front of a border. Self seeded - I'm assuming - from some distance away from the original ones I had three years ago. It is only my height at the moment - 5 feet in old money - and the flowers have yet to appear. It 'snags' me everytime I brush by it but I love it and it can stay there.

  • Thankyou for the replies,I feel somewhat left behind in the amount of posts you kind people have posted, they’re definitely prickly little gits I’ll admit it would be interesting to know if there is a record holder for a teasel plant as I’ve said in previous post I’ve never had one reach 10ft tall with so many flowers on it,only about 7-8 at the most and as mentioning they tend to self seed everywhere but in the first year I find them easily identifiable with their rosette look, second year they go mad with their growth

  • Haha ladybird4 thankyou so much for that and I bet I could’ve found that out if I wasn’t perhaps so lazy with the internet, anyway Jesus wept I’ve a long  way to go to beat that record and there I was thinking I might have been famous for all of 10 mins with a teasel

No worries @sidwallace/ireland, I reckon you could have the GW Forum record for a gigantic teasel. Partying Face on Noto Color Emoji Animated

I bought a few as plugs last year and they're now huge! I love them, towering over the back of the border. A really vivid green as well.  I'll try to keep and sow some of its seeds, but I've bought a few more plugs as backup for next year.

I was warned to be careful with Teasels as they self seed but I have grown for the first time this year (sown last year). I can’t believe what monsters they are! Easily 8F! I’ll prob cut some for dried flowers and keep the rest for the birds (hopefully noticing and pulling up seedlings next year).
My garden and I live in South Wales.
  • AuntyRach I’ve been growing these for a number of years in my small garden and they make such an impact,a beautiful plant albeit classed as a weed but even when they self seed the first year they are easily recognisable so can obviously be pulled up or transferred as like you said they self seed everywhere,my wife cuts them for dried flowers and the ones she has now in vases etc have been in there well over a year and keep the dead flowers on the plants too, they look majestic with the frost on them especially if you have nothing else growing in your borders during the winter plus we’ve had small birds peck at them too, this plant fascinates me and it is easily my favourite in my garden,it costs nothing aswell
