Why do plants do this?
Hello,
Just wondered why this salvia is splaying in the centre like this? Is just to a simple case of needing support? Thanks

It frequently happens with rich soils.
The plant makes the most of the nutrients available so grows quickly. When the flowers open the weight is too much for the stems to bear.
Salvias do best in poor soils.
They're smaller but far more robust
You could put supports around them before they flower.
I get it with salvias, veronica, sedum and plenty of other plants too.
I have about 40 mild-steel supports which work well on the rare occasions i remember to put them in at the right time

you need to put a plant support round it, Monty Don makes his own, there’s a YouTube video know how.
