Lawn problem to solve

We have a lovely puppy who has dug some holes in our lawn. Thankfully after much telling off she has now grown out of this habit, but we are left with about a dozen holes a couple of inches deep and the size of a hand or bigger. The unsightlyness is not really a problem at the moment as the lawn is generally a bit patchy and parched. The problem is that we like to entertain in the garden in the summer but now have trip hazards ideal for twisting ankles. We've tried filling them with soil but those holes still remain trip hazards as they are very soft areas in the hard dry lawn. I'm sure someone will have had this problem previously and found a simple, even if temporary solution to make soil quickly harden and stay in these holes.
Thanks in advance.

To harden soil: Fill hole, compress with heel, top-up with water, allow to drain, water again, compress again.  Repeat as necessary.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

Thanks, didn't think it was that simple, but the method seems to be starting to work.👍
