Peas failing to grow

ColinAColinA Posts: 392
I sowed peas in mid April and to date they are only 6-9ins tall, this is also the same for peas sown in mid May, no mater how much they are watered they will not grow.
I have spoken to many people on the allotments and further a field and the same problem is suffered even to the extent that a total failure in germination has happened to some gardeners. Has anybody any ideas as to why?

It depends what you grew them in.

As with all the other people I have spoken to recently the seeds were direct sown into the  soil as I have done over several years, I could understand if it was something I had done but many growers in North Yorks and Teeside are also affected

I have just harvested all of my early onward peas planted out in March, this year they have been the tallest that they have ever been I guess that it was all the rain we had in April.

I have had the same problem.  My beans are usually the crop that I have success with.  This year I have not had one successful plant despite 2 sowings in April and May.  They either don't grow or they were very stunted.

This year was the year that I said...no more peas as we had sowed so many over the years and the result was rubbish. HOWEVER...we have had the best harvest and still harvesting. They were sown indoors and transplanted out from their pots in groups and not separated. Sticks were put to stop the flight path of the dreaded pigeons and as I said the harvest continues.
  • Peas do not like long hot dry conditions. Mine are not growing well this year for the first time ver. The runner beans are enjoying themselves, but they are a jungle plant after all.
