Salvaging Salvia

I bought salvia Cool Cream this year which has flopped a bit. I carefully raised it but three of the stems snapped regardless. These are well developed stems with buds on and I really don't want to lose the flowers. As bad luck would have it, the remaining stem has no buds on it and isn't looking much like it's up for flowering this year. For the moment I've put the broken stems into a tray of water so they don't immediately wilt. What's the best way to keep the broken stems going? I really want the flowers this year, even if the stems only make it through the summer.

If there’s any cuttings material on the broken stems you could put them in a little glass of water and see if they’ll root.
    Have you taken a photo?

  • I haven't taken a photo as yet. My phone was almost dead at that point this morning and it's still charging. Will have to get one later.

Other than taking cuttings of any non-flowering shoots, I think all you can do with the broken-off branches is put them in a vase, bring them indoors and enjoy the flowers for as long as they last. The plant should grow new shoots from below the breaks which will probably flower later in the summer.

The sparrows break off quite a few flower stems here, but the little/young plants always recover.
  • Thanks for the suggestions, will have to wait and see how things transpire. The stem still feels rigid even though the newer growth has wilted so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed!
