Very excited. I have some bees living in a bird box in my apple tree!

Could be tree bumble bees. We had them in a nest box last year.

My mother had tree bumble bees nesting in her blue tit box last year.
Apparently the males buzz about outside the box waiting for the females to hatch and leave.

Thanks both. Just googled tree bumble bee, and I'm pretty sure that's what I have

How lovely! I didn't know they liked bird boxes! That's handy to know..

I have bees [and wasps] nesting every year - in the hog house, or the smaller version of it, or in the ground. I have some just now in the little raised bed behind the shed.
They nest in all sorts of places, depending on the type of bee. I know of some people having them in pots that have just been sitting with soil/compost in them as it's a convenient, suitable place.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Oh yes! I had a huge bumble bee nesting in a seed tray once. I only knew because the plastic greenhouse it was in blew over in a storm. I put it back and put bricks on the bottom shelf.
    I wouldn't mind a small hive, I've
only ever had wasps nesting in a loft, but their nests are beautiful works of art!
