Geum - totally tangerine

GraysGrays Posts: 172
Hi all,
we bought a couple of these herbaceous perrenials called Geum for a couple of pots.
It says on the label that they flower through till September, they are getting very leggy though and the flowers seem to be fading.
Has anyone any advice, would it be ok to cut them back and see if they grow and flower again, or would you just leave them be?
Many thanks.

  • Keep deadheading and when the last flower on a stem has finished then cut the stem right down to the bottom.

Yes I agree I spend ages deadheading them. It is worth while as they flower for many weeks. Look carefully as you could easily remove the next floer bud forming below.

They are a big plant and flowering stems are that long.
Your foliage isn't that big, maybe because it's in a asmall pot?

What's that hanging out to the right with it, did you plant that too?

In the pot you mean? Probably a weed I have missed, nothing else was planted with it, I will investigate tomorrow as I am now laid in bed......

    Thanks all for the tips.
  • This is one of the hardest working plants in our garden and frequently flower for 6-8 months of the year if you're lucky. Agree with the advice above, chop it after flowering and you should get further flushes of flowers.

I've read that some people have this plant in flower for months of the year. I've never managed more than a couple of months in early summer. I do dead head but I usually only get one flush of flowers.

I read that geums are edge of the woodland plants.

Mine is in full sun until about 2pm then in shade so light conditions not too bad. I have lost 7 of the 8 different geums planted in different spots over the years, and I suspect my garden is just too dry for them to flourish.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down

    Morning all,
It was indeed a weed, anyway……. I will spend a bit of time deadheading tonight after work, I have 2 of them.
Last questions…. When it has finally finished flowering, do we cut the whole plant back to the foliage? And would you prefer to have these in the ground, or will they be ok in pots going forward?
    Thanks again.

I have just cut mine right back to the foliage after deadheading for months. One started producing a few flowers back in early March.

A lot depends on the conditions you can provide, as @Topbird says they don't like really dry soil and l found they suffered dreadfully in full sun. My soil dries out really quickly at this time of year.

In my personal experience they're better off in semi shade, so they get sun for around 6 hours or so at this time of year..
I think that they are better off in the ground to be honest, they never look happy in a pot and can get quite straggly.

I spend the time to carefully deadhead mine (Mrs Bradshaw and Lady Stratheden) and they flower for about 4 months.
