Hi there, I presume these are Aquilegia? They self sees all over my garden. Question is, should I cut them back now, if so how far? And will they flower again this season?
Yes - Aquilegia. You can cut them right back to where the main foliage is. They'll produce the odd new spike, but it really depends on the individual variety, and where you are. Ours don't usually finish flowering for a while yet, so it's usually too late in the year for many more flowers to be produced.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
In my garden, once these have finished flowering, the plants turn tatty and do nothing to add to the aesthetics of the place. I cut the flower stems back and leave the rest of the plant to lurk behind better looking vegetation. They don't flower again until the following year and as you have said, they self seed everywhere so you should never be without a few to bring joy in spring.
