Dahlias not flowering (yet)

I have 40 dahlia plants (it said July flowering) with no signs of any flower buds. I have some in the shade, some in partial shade and some in full sun all the same. They were purchased as large plugs and I brought them on in the greenhouse. They are well watered in a quality compost. Any ideas on why they might not be flowering please?

  • Ah really, thanks, I just needed a bit of assurance. :)

They should be fine. I don't think any of mine have buds yet (though I must admit I haven't checked). If you think there's a problem later on, do post a photo. The ones in shade might struggle a bit more, but see how they go.

I have some plants grown from tubers which have just started to form flower buds this week.  The stems each have about 4 sets of leaves and are about 18 inches tall.  If yours are reaching that height I would think that they will soon start to flower.

  • I pricked out the tops and they are about 8 inches x 8 inches nice and bushy. Just no signs of any buds. Last years were so much better, different variety.

Very few of mine are in flower (four of of 20-odd) and a good third of them haven't formed many or any buds yet. And they were all started a month early

Mine now stay in the ground all winter and get a blanket of "hay" that OH strims in what passes for our wildflower meadow.   This winter was colder than usual here but most seem to have survived and are coming thru in stages.

The wee Bishop's Children dahlias with simple flowers that I sowed 4 years ago have been in fower for a month.   Some Pompom dahlias with medium sizzed flowers have been in flower a few days.   The gaudy colorette type has just opened its first flower and the big fat water lily style dahlias with huge complicated flower buds are barely tall enough to start thinking about budding.

It's early yet for most of the UK to have dahlias flowering and there's definitely a difference between the types so, once again, it's a case of patience being a key tool for gardeners - always asuming you've go the feeding and watering right.

  • Thanks Obelixx, I am a novice to growing Dahlias having fell in love with the ones I had last year. I tried to keep the tubers but they all went soft over winter in the greenhouse (in a box covered in paper etc.) I am going to have to do more research  on them. The variety I have also seems to be more attractive to snails too than the other variety which wasn't available any where this year.
