Plant identification

Does anyone recognise this plant? They were bought as sweet pepper seeds but certainly don’t look like the sweet peppers I grew last year!!!!

They look like piperaceae that produce peppercorns  in tropical countries, not capsicums that we call sweet peppers.
  • Thank you! It had a pic of red sweet peppers on packet 😂🤣

Where did you get the seeds from?

I think it could be Polygonum odoratum or Vietnamese coriander. Which is actually not a coriander!

I didn't think it looked exactly like pepper (the spice) or vietnamese coriander but I don't recognise it, so I put the pic in the RHS's plant identification tool and it came up with a 94.69% match for Persicaria lapathifolia https://www.naturespot.org.uk/species/pale-persicaria .
If I were you I'd be emailing Wilko with your picture and a picture of the seed packet if you still have it. The worst they can do is nothing and you might get a refund or new seeds for next year. Too late for this year's peppers though, unless you can buy well-grown plants from a garden centre.

I agree with Jenny,  water pepper.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Thank you everyone! Is it edible or do I need to discard it immediately?
