How much space do pelargoniums need?

Hello ☀️🔥

Ive read two different things via Google 😬

I bought three pelargoniums, I wanted to plant them up; how much extra space do they actually need? Width as well as depth…

Thank you!

@Escapetothegarden Did you have a label they can vary in size and this will affect distances.
Are you planting in a pot ?

@GardenerSuze thank you for your reply!

    Here is the label:

I had bought a rectangle terracotta planter to put them in …as I thought I could pot up three in a row as that’s how many look in window boxes in the photos I have seen…

…but then I thought wouldn’t they need more growing space? Or would they not grow that much in one season?

..then I thought that perhaps I could them in a deeper round planter that’s not too wide but is deeper…

    😅

I just wanted a general idea I guess… my gut instinct is to pot them in larger individual pots…

Generally, they won't grow as much in a container as they would in the ground, so they'll be fine in your trough.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

@Escapetothegarden I think all of your ideas are good. I have planted them in individual pots for a mediterranean look. Great in a trough or pot too.

I have grow balcon pelargoniums in window boxes also great in pots.

@Fairygirl Hope you are not too hot. Plenty of watering later, there is a small amount in the butts!

I have some in 20cm diameter (similar depth) pots and some in 30 ones (one plant per pot) and they fill those out. They look great in terracotta pots of all shapes and sizes. A staple for my patio - love them! 🪴

  • @GardenerSuze thank you! I have a few odd sized terracotta pots - one was deep and one was wide but shallow… so I was also wondering if they could be used (and thus avoid a £ visit to the garden centre ☺️)

The label says spread 14-16 inches so they should be (at least) that far apart for each plant to grow to its full potential if you plant them together in a trough or large container.
For individual pots a normal plant pot shape, roughly similar height and diameter, not tall and thin or short and wide, is ideal.
Of course you can pack them in with other plants in a mixed container or hanging basket or plant them closer for more of an instant impact if you want to - your plants, your choice!
Individual pots is probably easier if you plan to try to overwinter them (they're not hardy in most of the UK in most winters, so would need to be brought indoors).
