hi all, my first ever post. sorry if this a stupid question but ill post anyway. i put a box hedge round my house about 3 months ago - its all going well - planted with good soil, some chicken pellets and bone meal. was away on holiday for 3 weeks and we have obv NOT had much rain and i see some of them going very yellow - probably super dry! so i have given them a good water, will continue to water twice a week and also am going to apply some vitax buxus feed...

my question is - is it ok to sprinkle teaspoon on surface as close to the roots as i can , soak and let it work itself in? am finding it hard to get into the soil deep with the stones and weed membrane... see pictures....

any advice welcome and i thank you all for reading this.

( for some reason it's rotating my images not through my own doing , sorry for the sore necks in advance )

    Welcome to the forum.
Please don't feed them. They've already had chicken manure and bone meal. Right now they need water. Don't stick to a regime (twice a week) but have a look at the soil to see if it is dry. At the moment, if you are under hot and sunny skies, they will need watering every day.
  • Thanks so much ceres ! Will not feed them , and just apply water daily

I may be wrong.  I hope so.  But the ones that have gone brown have probably already died.  Prune back as far as green, sappy growth.  If you find none, hoik those out and plant others.

There is good reason that the best time for planting evegreens is October-November.  So wait untill then.

Search through past threads and you will finds of "advance" horror stories.

@karllewis14 No such thing as a' stupid question'. There are many concerns regarding box caterpillar and box blight. Which you should read and be aware of. When you do water do so at the base either in the evening or early am if possible. You want the roots to go down so a deep soak is best avoiding run off.

Excuse my ignorance but pruning back to find green growth - is just cut back the whole plant in search for something green ( in layman's terms)--- I did do a scrape on the bark of a few at Low level and there is green bark ( as opposed to brown ) on some of them ... so that is positive I thinks

Yes.  Your paraphrase captures the mood.  You may be OK.  You can cut back to tidy up, or you can just leave and see what regrows.
