FLAT Forsythia stem/branch

Not sure what's happened to this particular stem/branch on our Forsythia. It's completely flat, roughly one and a half inches wide by about 18" long then goes round like the rest of the plant. Seems to look perfectly healthy with plenty of leaves growing out of it.

It's the only stem/branch on the whole plant that is like it. Looks very much like a cactus only loads thinner. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

@1945crewood Could be fasciation. Damage fron prunung could be the cause.

I had to look that one up Suze ;)
Having read what Google had to say about fasciation, many branches growing into one, it does look like one of the flat, multi core ribbon cables you get in your computer.

Fasciation.  Not just pruning, any sort pf damage, possibly an insect bite at a sensitive stage.  It has happens more than once to my foxgloves - makes a most fascinating shape of flower.

I've had it on Fuchsia, Oleanders and Rhododendrons also.

@1945crewood Yes flowers as well as branches can be affected. With a stem of Forsythia it is more likely be due to pruning but other things can cause it too.
