Potato gone wild

I always plant a few small potatoes at the back of the compost heap and just let them get on with it.  This one's a monster at about four feet tall:

I've just staked it up as it was leaning over, but just wondered about the wisdom of this.  I did a bit of googling and came across this:

If your potato plants are mature, then it is not a cause for concern when they fall over (you can find out by digging to see if there are harvest-ready tubers under the plants). However, if your plants are not mature, you should investigate why they are falling over.

Should i just have let the plant fall over and let nature take its course or stake it up?

I don't know what the potatoes will be like but the leaves look healthy enough!

At about 750 feet on the western edge of The Pennines.  Clay soil.
