Mushrooms on sleepers

Hi there
We remodelled our garden 3 years ago and put in some railway sleepers around the steps and borders. Suddenly this year, we've got mushrooms going crazy - see attached photo (tennis ball for size). That's about 20% of them. And it shows growth in the last week since I removed them last weekend.
1. Anyone know what they are? (Can we eat them?)
2. Anyone know why they are suddenly here vs last 2/3 years when they weren't
3. Anyone know whether I can prevent them or do I just need to keep removing them
Thanks!
Nick

I had a eucalyptus felled a long time ago and the remaining stump produced lots of very similar looking fungi over many years.
I think it's called bracket fungus

The mycelium (sort of fungus roots) will be feeding on your sleepers
