Yeah, our nitida established very quickly and was growing a foot a year easily. But I don't think it can ever mesh together as well as privet which makes a neater hedge and is much stronger.

I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful

I have the nitida 'baggessen's gold' aka the Tina Turner bush. It's always a bit straggly. I'm putting in a short stretch of hedge as a screen and I've opted for Berberis Darwinii. Lots of flowers, lots of berries, safe nesting and can be kept tidy at pretty much any size. Oh yes, and evergreen.
    Can't beat that!
  • My Baggessen's Gold isn't straggly probably because of the clipping it gets. I'm kind of against Berberis but that's only because of the thorns.

I've had B's Gold in several gardens - dense and solid as a hedge due to  clipping, or even as a stand alone specimen.
That's the important factor with lonicera - clipping from an early stage. They can cope with hard pruning too - great for hedging, especially as a small one, but they'll grow quickly in the right conditions.

Good to see you @plant pauper. Where have you been!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Hi @Fairygirl. I've not been in the garden... 😕
Darwinii has no barbs, just wee holly-like leaves.
  • @plant pauper  Learn something new every day, thanks.
