Just an update to say my other cotinus (photo from 9 June) has now totally wilted. All leaves have died. Very mysterious. Not had a chance to check the woody stems, but probably a gonner. I have one plant left that has not yet wilted.

@clematisdorset There are no reports of Xylella in the UK at present according to the RHS web site. Worth a read.

I have grown C Grace. In dry windy conditions, which we have had here, the soft new growth would sometimes snap or stems just dry out and need removing.  Heavy rain could also do damage. I would prune our the worst but I do remember one year it was very badly damaged and I nearly gave up growing it. It was in a fairly sheltered south facing border.

@GardenerSuze thank you, that is interesting, I will have a look at the RHS. Did your C. Grace grow well eventually? That must have been frustrating when the weather was more rough. When they get big and older, they look more robust in terms of standing up to the weather, but I don't know, because mine have never got beyond a few years old.

The demise of mine has happened during stable, calm, warm weather. I have watered them all but not overwatered them. It is so mysterious. I could not bear to look at this current one much, but took a quick photo today. I find it rather depressing. I suppose I need to check the stems. Here it is, in its sorry state:

@clematisdorset Yes it grew well. I pruned it hard and it grew really long stems that were vulnerable.
It was in a south facing sheltered spot but with a few windy days stems were broken. There were also some stems that were fine but the leaves were damaged. The rest of it was fine but I had to cut alot away right down to the base.
From there on I pruned it differently some stems cut back hard and others left at 3ft.
This seemed to work.  I no longer grow it , always leaning into other things. I do have the Purple form which seems to be better behaved.
I don't think I have answered your question, I never thought it was due to any form of disease. The plant in your photo doesn't look good but they are tough  it is young growth that seems to suffer.
What I experienced could have been VW but I am unable to say for sure.

I forgot to confirm on this thread, that 'teabag mesh ' appears to have strangled my plants to death. I discovered the mesh at the end of last year. For anyone concerned, there are other threads on this forum concerning this 'teabag' mesh that is unfortunately used in horticulture.

@clematisdorset Thankyou for a reminder regarding the 'teabag' mesh I will be buying plants in the spring and your thoughts are a timely reminder for me. Lets hope others are now aware too and I am sorry you have lost your plants as a result.

@clematisdorset I thought I would 'bump' this back up to the top. The use of mesh on plants is on the increase with house plants in particular it would seem. Your message needs to continue to be out there.

Yes I eventually found the mesh and strangled roots, after weathering of the soil late last autumn:
