Victoria Plum pruning advice

Bare rooted Victoria plum planted Nov 2022 in 50L pot. Plan is to plant out in open ground in 2024 after building work on house finished. It was a feathered maiden and has now branched out from the main stem. Any advice on getting it into a compact shape. Aim is to keep it 8-10 foot high. I’ve had difficulty with pruning plums in the past: when and how?

Has anyone found an effective method to treat pocket plum on an allotment? Apparently it is a fungus. I have one badly affected tree and it appears to be spreading to damson and greengage.

Every plum or damson or greengage that I have ever bought has come with a label promising “ultimate height 10-12 feet”…

    It’s all lies. 😊

Your little tree looks lovely just as it is. I wouldn’t prune it this year. I’d wait until next summer when it’s in its final place. That way you get a better idea of the branches and which way they are going to point.

Do you mean they are bigger, or smaller?

Oh heck, I've just had one delivered yesterday. Victoria plum on pixy rootstock, claims to be approx 2.5 metres.

  • @Jess91 I have a Victoria plum on pixy that's now 5 years old but hasn't reached 2.5 metres tall as yet. That being said, I have pruned it the last couple of years and I dread to think what size it would be now if I'd just left it 😬 The amount of new growth each year is insane.

@februarysgirl yes I've seen yours, you posted them on my 'show me your dwarf fruit trees' thread. It was on your recommendation that I ordered this one from Ornamental trees, I'm really pleased with it size wise so thank you again for that! It's a little droopy at the moment but it seems to have taken it 4 days to arrive via courier so hopefully it will perk up in the next few days. It was rather dry.

Hmm, hopefully I can keep it to size with pruning then. If not so be it I guess, more plums for me!

  • Ah yes, I remember now! Glad you're happy with the tree 😁 It definitely sounds like it needs a long dunking although mine has always been a bit on the droopy side compared to the other plum and green gage. Still trying to prune it out! I don't do anything fancy, I just prune it back to the second leaf node of the new growth and take out anything growing inwards.
