Can I plant a shrub near the roots of an amelanchier tree?

Hello,

I bought a hydrangea Annabelle.  I had picked a spot near an amelanchier tree and as I was digging I came across a root.

I thought that roots would go down and out as opposed to outwards!

Can I plant my hydrangea there? Will the hydrangeas roots just grow around the trees roots?

A bit stressed as I really don’t have any other places I can put it ☹️

Thank you

@Escapetothegarden I do know that Amelanchiers don't have particularly deep roots, which is why you have found one.  If it is a mature tree it will be taking it's share of moisture.
I cannot comment on your Hydranga all need a retentive soil but I have never grown Annabelle.
I wouldn't cut the root just bury it if you do plant it.

I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
