Japonica lonicera leaves browning and wilting

Hi have a honeysuckle in a 40cm pot in it's second year which has grown expectedly vigorously. In a dappled by tree east facing location that gets around 4 hours direct sunlight a day. Recently its leaves are browning and wilting and it's looking rather unhealthy. The Jasmine clematis and other honeysuckle in the same conditions are doing well and not suffering. In the first year I regularly watered with a balanced fertiliser. This year I stopped fertilising as I heard it would have the potential to stop flowering. I'd appreciate any advice.

  • I've purchased some CHempak 8 Low nitrogen fertiliser. and some fungicide. I think I way have a powdery mildew problem as some stalks and leaves have signs of patchy white areas. It does seem to affect a specific area of the plant.

Powdery mildew usually strikes when a plant is too dry at the roots. Honeysuckles want to be large vigorous plants so it's probably outgrown the container. I think it would be happier planted in the ground so it can spread its roots out.

It's not going to be happy long term in a wee pot like that. Powdery mildew is because it's too dry, and possibly has poor airflow as well, so water is what it needs more than anything else. It needs to be in soil too, not just compost, so you may need to look at what you're growing it in  :)
