Dug this up, any ideas?
Thanks!

  • It’s a moth pupa, sometimes they wiggle 🙂.

It's a bit freaky when they wriggle!  If I unearth any of these the blackbird or robin who are always in attendance when I'm in the garden generally have them.
Gardening in East Suffolk on dry sandy soil.
  • I’ll pop it in the bird feeder then! 👀

Probably one of the Noctuidae moths. There's quite a few species and they're mostly variations on brown and fluffy but there are some really pretty ones as well and they're all good pollinators. When I disturb them I tend to keep pupa like this safe in a bug box in the shady, humid corner of the greenhouse until they pupate.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

My sentiments to, if re buried it could turn into something beautiful.
  • Thank you, I will put it away 👍
  • I didn’t intend to be insensitive, I don’t know much about moths other than from a dislike of moths in clothes and the fact that birds eat them!

I think only two species eat clothes & carpets etc, and the pupae look like grains of rice (we had the little buggers and didn't know for months!). The rest need helping, so I'm glad you're looking after it. 😊
