What causes this

Greetings. What do you think has caused this hole- its 30 cm deep (11inches)

    Could be a rabbit, or a badger or a fox. I'm sure other people here have experience of wildies on their plots. Do you have water nearby?

    Fill it in. However I have a hole in my lawn, I fill it in and the foxes dig it out again.

    It isn’t a rat if that what you’re worried about.  You haven’t said the diameter of it,  could be voles

    most likely, size not stated but you can tell by the grass. None of the other animals mentioned make little round holes like that

    Can you just leave it? I wouldn't be filling holes in at this time of year, you might be suffocating young *whatevers* - rat holes are an exception of course, but yours isn't a rat.
    Do you know anyone you could borrow a night camera off for a couple of nights?
