Thanks so much @Lyn - how fab to have an expert to hand 👏🏼 I don't have ownership of it yet, it's a weirdly complicated process, but we now have all the documentation needed so just some paperwork to be signed. Nothing will happen for some time yet.

Thanks for that info @Lyn. In our case, the letters were actually engraved into the stone and then painted so maybe your cork method wouldn't have worked? I thought the bill was rather high but then you're talking expensive Oxfordshire! I had given them a deadline of my mother's birthdate in late November but the weather was very wet for weeks running up to it so I think taking the stone up was the only way to get the job done in time.
It will undoubtedly make Lyn shudder and I would totally trust her rather than this seemingly suck it and see approach. As I said, there are many more clips.
Also showing up in the Google response was an Amazon listing of restoration products.
Yes Ben. I did cringe at that, but if people can’t afford a professional it’s the next best thing. Engraved letters are the easiest to do, we could make our money on those.
I couldn’t find anyone working on lead, just engraved.
The man doing the gold leaf was as we do it, a yellow base and gold leaf, only thing with that is that you have to chose a day with absolutely no wind. I have worked with a big golfing umbrella over me.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Thanks Ben, I was hoping you'd found a video of someone doing the lead lettering renovation but no such luck. However, by coincidence, you've managed to link to a headstone with a surname that's in my family tree which has sent me down a rabbit hole ..
