How much to prune a rose and when?

Hello folks,

Our garden was left to grow for some time before we moved in.

Now things have come into bloom, I've discovered there's a rose growing.

It's really high so I'm assuming its overgrown  and needs to be pruned, but does anyone know about this?

I know you get climbing roses etc so I'm wondering if it's meant to be quite tall.

Was gonna prune it a bit so it doesn't flip into the neighbours garden but don't want to destroy it and saw some birds perching on it so have left it alone for now.

I would wait until it has flowered then prune it. Looks like a climber but is there anything for it to climb on.
Photos have to be cropped a bit before posting, glitch on site.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
