Blackcurrant pruning.

Harold15Harold15 Posts: 15
I have had this bush in the tub for about five years, and it has always given a good crop of fruit. A few months ago I pruned it low, to about six or seven inches. The bush looks very healthy. but I cannot see any buds appearing. Am I thinking too early. I live in Lancashire, and the variety is Big Ben.

I always prune my blackcurrants by removing the fruited stem at its base and then sitting comfortably on th eterrace while I pick off the fruit.  This automatically renews the plant.  The stems remeining go on to mature and produce fruit the following year so it may well be that your young stems have not matured enough to flower and fruit this year.

What I would say about yours is that it would be very much better off in the ground where it can access all the nutrients and water it needss.  Yours will soon run out of room and, given the shape of your pot wth its narroiwng neck, be almost impossible to remove in one piece without breaking the pot so consider whanging the pot for a larger, wider specimen or planting yours out asap.
