Patio & Pergola suggestions

Hi all, we are trying to plan our patio with a pergola and the rest of the garden, but this year the focus will just be the patio and pergola. I have come up with a few designs and below is my favorite... but still doesn't feel like 'the one'.
I'm not a landscape designer but pretty handy at DIY and will be doing all the work myself. For reference the garden is approximately 19 meters long (from the bifold doors) and 10 meters wide and there is a 4 x 3 meter garden room at the bottom.
I wondered if anyone has any opinions on my design or, even better, wants to offer a completely different design? All comments much appreciated.

What do you want the pergola for?

If it's going to be covered for weather protection, that will dictate what you do and you'd probably end up with something not far off what you've got above.

Me, personally? Assuming it's about creating an outdoor 'room', I'd have a single pergola with infill panels on the 'wall' next to the lawn, and perhaps along the fence line. I'd leave the rest open. It'll box off that space nicely, without looking jarring against the bifolds, and it'll do it without feeling too imposing.

The thing that looks off to me is the pergola position going half way over the doors, I don’t think looking out those lovely big doors and seeing a post in the middle would be very nice.

I agree that it would look better aligned with your doors. This would also retain your side access into the garden, if under the pergola you will “loose” it unless you keep it clear

I wouldn't put a pergola close to the house - it can block out light, particularly in winter, if glazed it can require regular cleaning and make the temperature below it uncomfortable in summer.  I'd consider an electric canopy or large umbrella for that area.  Alan Titchmarsh pointed out in a recent article in GW magazine that pergolas are perfect for pigeons to perch and should be avoided over seating areas!

  • Are you sure the hardstanding is big enough for whatever you want to put there? Table and chairs etc. It looks a little on the small side in terms of a big useable square or rectangle.
Personally, I think a glass-covered area is great. Yes, it might get a bit too toasty a few days a year but you'll appreciate the few extra degrees for the rest of the year and I expect it's probably more in the evening that it will see use anyway.
Are you going to be using the side access much is deff something to consider.

What's that  grey block you've drawn sticking out of the house at the end of the bifolds?
  • Thanks for all the replies. Yes I will still be making the side access accessible as we will use this.

@oliveraustin in that design it comes out from the house around 4.5 meters, and is around 9 meters wide so big enough I think. The grey block is where the bi folds go when they are fully open.

We have had another idea of having the pagola away from the house, at lawn level and some steps down from the patio to it.
