When is my Buddleja coming back?

We were convinced our Buddleja was dead as we pruned it back too late last year- it looks as though there is growth but obviously most Buddlejas are out and flowering at this point in the year. If it does look to be coming back when can we expect it to be fully grown. Sorry for the ignorance- two very amateur but passionate gardeners! Advice appreciated.

    I think that's had it.

  • it will be fine, in August you will not recognise it, it grows very fast once it gets into its stride. You may even get flowers this year.

Its sending up new shoots now. They will probably flower this year. It is a very old buddleja and I would take a few cuttings off when the new shoots are about 8 inches long to produce a new plant. Then in winter dig the old  plant out and start again.

Once it's growing well again you could take some cuttings and grow on to replace that one.

I agree with Alan,  it will take time but could come back but it will be later.
We’ve sawed them down and they slowly recover,  will be better next year.

    Hi @suzib

A few years ago I had a buddleia that split in half after too much snow. The following spring I cut it down to a low stool like yours is now. The first year it didn't grow well at all (see https://forum.gardenersworld.com/discussion/1056980/whats-wrong-with-my-buddleia#latest) but a couple of years on it's just as vigorous as it used to be. Bushy and about 2m tall at the moment. I wonder if yours might do something similar - depends if you're happy to wait it out

fantastic thank you so much for your advice
  • Give it time - I'm sure that little bit of green will shoot up in no time. My neighbour dug up a buddleia last spring (I salvaged the poor thing) it was all top green growth with only a small woody root system. I cut it back to about 2-3ft high with just a littering of buds on 2 thick stems. Now its healthy and bushy. Theyre definitely tough plants
