Pansies & violas - how long can they stay in container?

M0rganaM0rgana Posts: 47
I made up some containers with pansies, violas, euphorbia and aquilegia based on one in the magazine. The aquilegia flowers have died now. They did have a greenfly issue (ladybirds arriving next week to move into our new 'ladybird lodge!') but I think they might have been at their natural end anyway?

I wanted to move the aquilegia to another part of the garden where there's a bit more dappled shade etc.

Will the pansies and violas be okay to stay in the container? How long for? Should I replace the aquilegia in there with something else?

You can leave them as long as you like. I think the other plants will soon fill the space where the aquilega were, particularly the euphorbia. You didn't say what variety you have but some of them can get big.

Pansies and the like can stay as long as they’re booming . Once they go a bit raggedy just pull them up and replace them with something else . I daresay the aquilegia will have dropped seeds and will come back next year in more or less the same place .

My violas go for two or three years in pots.

Pansies are my favourite flowers,  always got some in one stage or another, I sow seeds every year, usually twice, early and late.
They’re  happy in fairly poor soil so can stay in your tubs until they’ve finished,  if you keep them dead headed they’ll go on for a long time. At the end,  leave some seeds to form and dry on the plants so you can sow those ready for next year.

I have some violas in two pots. This is their 3rd year of self seeding, they look a bit raggedy now. I will have to throw them away when they have finished and start again.
