Lilac bush

I have a lilac bush I've had it three years it's always had an abundance of flowers. This year the bush  seems to have doubled in size but I have not got many flowers at all. Why as this happened please.

I've only had that happen with mine if I've given it quite a severe pruning. I'll get no flowers the following year, but back to normal the year after.

It happened with ours because we let it get a bit leggy but when we started to prune it lightly after the flowers, it improved things.

I’m having our lilac tree out,  it’s grown so many suckers around it, it’s taking over,  it didn’t get many flowers this year,  I don’t think they like acid soil.
I used to lime it but haven’t done for a while.
