New project

Janie BJanie B Posts: 963

I love reading about projects, so thought I’d share mine… a project for this autumn…

We have a small front garden, laid to lawn (no-mow-May is continuing…), except for our 10-year old wisteria tree in the middle. It is surrounded by large mixed shrubs, and is very private, and shady for a good few hours. I’m thinking of taking up the grass, and laying either bark or gravel, and planting some roses (peachy/orange) and perennials (blue)… I'm having fun planning what to buy, but am open to suggestions…

@Janie B Do you know what your large shrubs are? Will you be cutting them back at all? Most roses love full sun. What sort of soil do you have? Lots of questions!

There's such a mixture of shrubs... viburnum, holly, choisya, weigela, forsythia, laurel... We don't want to cut them too far down, and a massive Portuguese (?) laurel tree. The soil is pretty clayey...

If your Wisteria does well, Roses should not be a problem, and they love clay.
How can you lie there and think of England

Yes I agree with @punkdoc Roses like a clay soil. I am not a rose expert but other forum members are, hopefully there will be more help. Obviously the shrubs will continue to grow and the area will become progressively more shady. Do you know which way it faces?
