Onion seeds from plant

Harvested a few onions i started in Spring. The seed heads, can i use the seeds again. I know their green now but how long until they turn to viable seeds to use again? Do i keep in an envelope somewhere cool?

Thankyou in advance.

    What variety?
Try it and see what happens, but really you should leave them on the plant to form fully and dry. You may have interrupted that process by pulling them early.

I pulled them as the onion seed head was splitting anyway on that 1. As to the variety.... I THINK they were Alisa Craig. I haven't touched them I'm just leaving them on paper towels now to dry as much as possible.

They're a funny looking onion plant, it's shame you're not sure what they are or where the seeds came from, they're like some weird hybrid or a wild onion.
I know they're forming bulbs, but look at the flat leaves. They're more like leeks. Onions tend to have tubular hollow leaves.
I'm no expert on them though, just an observation, but I don't think they're what you think they are.

They certainly smell very oniony. I've never tried leeks before now at my Allotment where i dug them up but ironically my Musselburgh ones have just germinated. Hmmm, I'll double check the seed packets after work.

They would need to dry off before you pulled them,  but to be honest for a 99p packet of seed,  I wouldn’t bother with them.
They definitely don’t look like onions. The thick stems and wide leaves look more like leeks.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
