A near neighbour has had a brick wall partially demolished by ivy. It would flick sand in the face of a 30 year old fence.

My keyboard went weird yesterday so I am sorry for the numerous typographical errors  @carlie.hollowell18YaNc7oyU   I was trying to say that it may not take too long to trim it if done a few times a year.  Even if some of it has to be or has been cut now, it would be worth leaving as many older stems ( as you feel able) , to develop flowers and berries. It is such an important plant for wildlife habitats and food for birds. You might need to check, but young ivy plants take some years before they reach maturity and so younger plants would not bear flowers or fruit. Thought it worth mentioning. When I trim my ivy, I concentrate on different sections each year, so that I am not cutting back every thing that will flower all at once. That way, there will be fruit and flowers every year and the birds and wildlife are happy and the ivy acts as a permeable noise and pollution buffer too!  :)

Since your elderly neighbour can't look after it herself, could you be a 'good neighbour' and offer to trim and look after it for her?
That'll allow you to control the growth; avoid her exposing the fence which will then probably fall down and stop her from doing anything drastic like killing the ivy.
I'd guess that you've already offered your services but thought I'd just mention it.

    Edit:
Ooops - reading back through the thread I see that you've already done so.
However, I'll leave the comment up just to show that I reckon that being nice is good!
