Someone has sprayed something. How long ago was the pavement dug up?

I would cut out every browned leaf. New leaves should grow soon to replace.

I still think it is something applied. They have either used a spray to mark a line, or someone has gone along with weedkiller.  I would still cut out all brown leaves, and hope it wasn't glyphosate.

Seems a bit too perfectly straight and contained to be from deliberate spraying (I could be wrong..). Same height all along and nothing has dripped onto the leaves below..  I wonder if they were using some machine to lay or flatten the tarmac that was spraying out hot steam (or something) from a nozzle at exactly that height as they pushed it along the pavement.

Very good idea borgadr. That s probably a lot less damaging long term than paint or weedkiller.  I would still cut back the dead leaves to encourage new ones to grow to fill the gap.  If the people that dug up the pavement are in the vicinity still, have a word.
