Yew Plants Drooping

Hi guys,

I planted a new a new Yew hedge a year and a half ago from little baby bare root plants. They put on a little growth last summer and struggled to get going slightly but this year they have really started to do well and are putting on a lot of fresh lovely green growth.

Firstly there are about 4 plants that don't look like they are doing that great. They are trying to put on growth and what little growth they have done so far is bronze coloured whereas the others are bright green. I wouldn't say these 4 are thriving at the moment.

Also one of the plant's new growth is really floppy and drooping down. It looks really sorry for itself. I gave it a water yesterday however it still hasn't recovered. Any ideas of the cause?

I do have some spare potted yews to replace them with if needed however I would prefer to try and save them.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Craigh

I interplanted my leylandii hedge plants with small yew tree plugs 5 years ago with the idea of eventual replacement..  Very poor dry builders' soil.  Deep shade.  I lost 40%; they never grew roots outside the plugs ("tea-bag syndrome?)

The survivors are growing well, but don't like the midday sun.    Young leaves easily droop;  I need to water daily-ish..

Brownish new leaves iare quite common on healthy mature yew trees.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

Mine are in full sun first thing in morning up until about 3-4pm. I dug over the soil really well and quite deep to loosen it before I plated them all. I dug the entire border rather than just a hole for each one.

Mine are not mature so I can't understand the bronze growth. In fact the entire plant is more a bronze colour rather than a lovely fresh green like 90% of the others. I think I planted about 30 in total to make a hedge.

So I have now taken that one plant that is badly wilting out of the ground and put it in a container to see if I can help it. This one strangely enough looks quite healthy apart from a bit of bronzing.

You can see from the photos...
