I have Niwaki Forged Snips for thin stems and Okatsune Secateurs Small No. 101 for roses and woody stems.
I use alcohol to wipe them down between plants, and before I put them away I clean them using camellia oil and Crean Mate from Niwaki. Also send them in to Niwaki for cleaning/servicing once every couple of years (where they replace springs as needed).
I've got two pairs - a cheap pair from Asda and a pair of Drapers. The Asda ones are great, but I also use a pair of scissors which are better than anything for very fine stems, and the tips are very sharp so I can get in at anything 'full' and snip the flower stem off very easily without breaking/damaging anything I don't want to snip. I suppose it depends how much stuff you have to dead head too.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Thanks all for your input. I see a general theme, these thin scissor-like snips look like something to give a go. Will look around and place an order for some when I next get to it.
£7.39 on Amazon (sold and fulfilled by) for two pairs! I don't know what is going on with the lack of ability to see the les than 5 star reviews, but there doesn't seem to be many anyway.
They seem fine. Not the most amazing build quality feel, but they do the job well. I gave them a test and they dead headed very easily with decent precision.
Thanks again to everyone for your input and to those who suggested this style of snipper.
I bought these three years ago and they've been excellent. They get regular use and are still very sharp, and will remain so as long as i can keep them hidden from OH!
