House Plants

My daughter has inherited two house plants from a family member and would like some advice from the forum please.
Her questions are: what are these plants and how does she look after them?

The first one is a Spathiphyllum or Peace Lily. It should be kept away from direct sunlight, preferring a more shady spot. Houseplants shouldn't be overwatered as this can cause the roots to rot. The general rule is to wait until the top inch of soil is dry before watering the plant but this can be difficult to gauge especially when the plant takes up most of the pot so I give my peace lilies a good soak about once a week unless they look droopy in which case they get an emergency water. Add some plant food to the water (I use Baby Bio) during the growing season. I must admit to adding a little during the winter as well because the plants continue to grow due to the warmth from the central heating. Always make sure the plants aren't sitting in water so after watering them, make sure any excess has drained away. These plants can get quite big over the years and need repotting occasionally when they get too big for the pot and you can see roots protruding from the holes in the base.

@BlueSchoolBoy Peace Lily and Anthurium. Sorry I am unable to help with their care. There are members on the forum who will be able to offer more help.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • Anthuriums need bright, indirect light, humid air, and moist soil. Try misting them frequently, and you can also check out how much water they need by sticking your finger in the soil - if it's damp, you're all good! While Peace Lilies are pretty low-maintenance! Just make sure they get bright, indirect light, and water every week or so. If the soil is dry, you know it's time. Some good tips are to mist it, too, if your room's air is dry. Plus, trims are always a-ok. And finally - you'll know how much you're loving it by the drool-worthy leaves popping up! Enjoy!
