Large flowering dramatic shrub?

robin 435robin 435 Posts: 54
Hello

I have a small bed in the front lawn and am looking for a large flowering shrub that will create a centre piece. It can be evergreen or deciduous, but ideally with a long flowering period. The position is full sun. Do you have any suggestions please?

Thanks

    A shrub rose?

    Fuchsia magellanica
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • It depends on whether you want evergreen or deciduous, but for full sun and a long flowering period, I think Anthuriums, Camellias, Magnolia, and Roses would all work great! They'll make a stunning centrepiece, as long as you trim them carefully!

A large shrub in a small bed … 🤔… how small is small … and how large were you thinking of?

Cornus kousa springs to mind if the soil is moisture retentive.

I was just about to suggest that Cornus @Dovefromabove ;)
    A real statement plant.
The size of the space, and the bed, are very important though.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

You will get a list of our favourites.  But much better if you look around and make your own decision.  Visit gardens with labels:  NT, RHS, Gardens Open.  Speak to locals.  Read books and magazines, watch Gardeners' World ...
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

Should the flowers themselves be large?
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
