What is this bug?

Can anyone tell me what these bugs are please? And what I need to do to clear them off. The pieris has sooty mold.

Thanks!

Could be Wooly Aphid larvæ.  You could google that and see if it’s like yours.

It's known as Cushion Scale insect. https://www.rhs.org.uk/biodiversity/cushion-scale
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

You also need to look at how you're growing your pieris. It looks very unwell.
Where do you have it, and is it in a suitable site and soil? They're generally very easy if they have the right conditions  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you all very much for replying!
I'd never heard of cushion scale before. That sure is what it is!

Is there an easy way to get rid of it?

Although I love gardening I'm not very good at it. And I don't have enough time to do it justice...
My pieris is in a pot. I moved so many times my plants all moved with me. Now I'm scared to put roots down, as it were!
I think it had the wrong compost added once upon a time (although I did try my best to take it back out). And it's needed repotted for years. Poor thing 🙈
Any tips on care would really be appreciated. I've lost lots of plants this year.
I've considered biting the bullet and plantain my pieris but I'd have to dig a big hole and put ericaceous comport in I think?
Thank you all again! So nice to hear voices in the wilderness 😊
