Winter Bay Tree damage

I've seen several threads on here about bay trees in pots which have suffered damage through this winter, so though I'd seek advice/opinion regarding my own.

We've had 2 standard bays in large terracotta pots for 15+ years and they have thrived until this winter. When I unwrapped them a couple of months ago, both had splits in the trunks and browning of the leaves, one quite a bit worse that the other. Not really knowing what to do, I gave both a light trim, to remove the worst of the browning and hoped they'd recover. One seems to be doing so and has quite a bit of new growth but the other is going from bad to worse, although has a few bits of new growth.

As you can (hopefully) see from the pics, the bark has gone very brittle and has split open and there has been additional die-back and browning in the crown. Is this tree a goner or is there anything that I can do to rescue it? Thanks for any advice
