Can anyone please diagnose the problem with my Japanese Acer tree, it has a yellow crust on some branches the leaves on the affected branches are stunted.

  • IMO it's lichen which does not harm the tree and shows you have good air quality.

As it's in a pot , make double-sure it has adequate moisture especially during this dry spell .
An occasional feed would be beneficial too .
PS ......to me , Lichens always look good on old trees .

    Lovely lichen  :)
A great addition to any shrub/tree.
However, if there are problem s with branches, that needs addressed. Any potted plants - especially shrubs/trees, need a lot more attention than in the ground. As @Paul B3 says - check the moisture levels are adequate, refresh the soil if it hasn't had that done. perhaps re pot it if it hasn't had any refreshing for along time, and ensure the drainage is good too.
The site it's in is also important - wind can be as damaging as too much sun, for example, so a semi shaded spot is ideal, and if you're in one of those regularly drought ridden parts of the UK, that's a good idea over the next few months   :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
