Container shrub for shaded patio

M0rganaM0rgana Posts: 47
One of the 'things to do now' in the June magazine is plant shrubs in pots on the patio. My patio is mostly in shade. I've tried googling etc but can't work out which shrub would be a good one to try... please share any suggestions!

An Acer, Fatsia Japonica or dwarf Hydrangea perhaps, depending on the size of your container. The Fatsia is evergreen, the others deciduous.  Hostas also make good container plants in shade, although they are perennials, not shrubs.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

I had a golden Philadephus Aureus in a large pot on the terrace at my last house which was north facing so in shade a lot of the time. The websites say partial shade or dappled shade. It's golden leaves brightened up the terrace and it's white flowers in spring fulled the air with fragrance. I was sad to leave it behind but it was heavy as I'd had it several years and the buyers wanted it.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
