New garden ideas

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a bit of garden inspiration/ideas! We moved in here about a year ago and haven't done anything with the garden yet but I want to make it into something more family friendly so my son has space to play and I have somewhere to sit when the sun comes out. The previous owners went for low maintenance but I really don't like the stones I feel like it renders a large part of the garden useless! I've started buying a few potted plants to go round the garden and want to add to those too.

Your garden looks wonderfully private with lovely mature trees nearby. Your raised area could be quite versatile. What direction do you face and what is the drainage like? Does rain puddle anywhere or is it a drier sort of space? Have you checked what the soil feels like when digging with a trowel or spade etc? These sorts of details will probably influence what sort of planting is likely to be successful! Is it astro turf around the sides of your garden? (Forming a pathway?) I think I have new garden envy! :)

Hehe thank you! I don't think drainage is good, with heavy rain we get a waterfall coming out the front corner of the stoney area which then pools on the patio and we have no drain! or am I yet to find one lol. We've not gone under the stones yet to see what the soils like so unsure yet. That's astro turf up the sides then a deeper section at the back, I have to say I was rather pleased when I saw it had astro turf and disposed of my lawnmower 🤣 It's South facing but due to the trees only really the front half gets the sun

I see! I am sure there are bigger brains than mine that can help you @claire_l_s, but it sounds as though the sunny area for sitting will be towards the house, is that the idea? Are you hoping to sit on the raised bit rather than lower on the patio pavers, or a bit of both?!   Do you want to have a dedicated play area for your son? :) I think your garden could be a lovely serene space especially with the trees swishing in the summer breeze  :) You are lucky in the sense that you will not need to lug a lawn mower up those steps! Should the astro turf wear out later on, I might recommend a chipped bark which can be quite soft to walk on, but it sounds as though the drainage issue might be one of the first things to deal with. I am sure more experienced gardeners will have some ideas for you. Are you itching to get started?! If so, I know that feeling and spring is here  :)
