Odd Green Shoots Flamingo Tree

Hi There,
I'm going someone can advise. We inherited this tree when we moved to this house and each year since, we have been removing the long green shoots which come up.

However, I'm not really sure if we should leave them? Are they new branches or another tree grafted to it completely?

Hopefully you can see what I mean from the picture. They are growing much taller than the rest of the tree and plain green.

Hello @richard.hawkins1231dk31qCw and welcome to the forum. You have been doing absolutely the right thing in removing the plain green shoots as these will be coming from the stock the variegated 'top' has been grafted on to. If you leave them they will eventually take over and you will lose all the lovely, variegated foliage. Keep taking them all off.

  • Oh, so they won't grow in to more branches with lovely leaves. That's a shame.

Thanks for confirming though. I'll get the cutters out tomorrow in that case 😁.
