Too late to divide/chop back my Hakonechloa macra?

Pete.8Pete.8 Posts: 11,340
I bought some Hakonechloa macra a couple of years ago but wasn't expecting them to grow so fast.
I planted 6 Sanguisorba Tanna behind them expecting their flowerheads to hang above the grass.
But the grass is spreading quickly and overwhelming the Sanguisorba.
Is it too late in the year to use a spade to chop off some of the back of the grass that is growing into the Sanguisorba?
I can't move the Sanguisorba back as there's a fence just out of shot.

I would go ahead @Pete.8, it's better to divide them when they are actively growing anyway.  As long as you keep the chopped plant and any divisions well watered they should be fine.

Thanks @plantminded I was hoping that might be the case.
I usually split other grasses soon as I see some reasonable early growth in Spring.
I know a friend would like some so I'll get on with it.

Looks like a nice combination you have there too!

Thanks - but I have to confess I got the combination idea from the Crocus site.... 😁
