Sagging Bush

Hi Guys,

We inherited a rather nice garden but are not great at gardening. We have a sagging bush (photo below) and when investigating further there is a lot of dead branches behind it covered in fungi. Am I best to wait until winter and cut everything back or is there anything I can do now?

  • Can we have a close-up of the fungi please?

It just looks like the Choysia [at the front]  is being crowded out by the Photinia [the red leaved shrub]  That can create problems, although it looks healthy enough. You can certainly cut the photinia back, at any time, which will allow more room, and better airflow around the choysia.

    Are you sure it's fungi @charliemn19873zEeF7ty ?
A photo will help though, as already said  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I've zoomed in of the photo and can't see any fungus anywhere.
Is it just lichen on the branches?

  • Thanks for the responses, this is the fungi on the branches. Though this may not be relevant, I just noticed a lot of dead branches like this

I think @Fairygirl has hit the nail on the head!
The Photinia has caused so much shade that some branches have died back.
I can't see any obvious problem with them - other than that those bits are dead.
The rest of the shrub looks in fine fettle!
