What to get

I am asking members to please recommend me suitable plants. Thanks.  I am new to gardening so I hope I explain well what I am looking for. Now my Dad has died I am the gardener for my Mums 2 gardens but I am a novice.

My Mum has asked me to replace some perennials she doesn't like.

Her stipulations to me are

No plants that are just one colour.

Very colorful flowers.

Flowers years after year.

Flowers spring or maybe very early summer.

Keeps on growing in height and width year after year (and thus at some point in the future will need pruning).

I will show mw my Mum examples of your recommendations and let her choose what she wants.

Hello and welcome. I am sure there will be suggestions but can you give us some more info about the garden conditions and what the soil is like? What plants have been growing well or not so well up to now?  :)

Perhaps she would like some hardy geraniums. They come in white, and shades of pink or purple. If they are happy in their location they spread into quite big plants, and can be divided and moved to different locations.

Potentilla fruticosa Goldfinger. It's loud and glorious.

Delphiniums are perennial flowers.( plants that come back year after year). We've had them in the ground and in pots and they do well in both.We have had white ones and purple ones, and year after year they grow a little bit taller but not much.
We have Phlox in the garden too ( white ) and we have grown the pink ones too but they were smaller ( for us). They spread underground and send up shoots every year thus spreading wider out.
We have very tall Canterbury Bells too ( Calendula) , they are white. I believe you can get them in different colours but I've never grown them so don't know whether they grow tall /wider or not.
    Hope this helps....

A very personal decision.  I won't recommend my own choices.

Get her feedback.  Can she get out?  Visit gardens-open, garden centres, NT, RHS.  Get a good book  (library?), order some nursery catalogues (is she au fait online?). What did your father like?

I wonder what the perennials are that she doesn't like?  If you could take some pics of your mum's gardens that would really help, and give us an idea of which bits get the sun and when - and what kind of soil.  Sandy or clay?  And if you know what plants already do well in your mum's gardens, that will help with recommending plants with similar needs.
